Our cosmetic surgery office uses the Cynosure® ICON Aesthetic Laser System equipped with the 1540 Fractional Non-ablative fractional handpiece that received FDA clearance for the treatment of stretch marks based on clinical studies.
Stretch marks mostly affect women resulting from mechanical shear stress on the skin following pregnancy, weight changes, puberty growth, and steroid use and stretch marks are typically located on the abdomen, breasts, buttock, thighs in females and shoulders in males. Stretch marks are defined as collagen tears in the dermis resulting in unsightly linear scars in the epidermis. Because the problem resides in the deeper layers of skin (dermis), successful treatment of stretch marks must occur with laser technology that can accurately penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin.
The Cynosure ICON laser using the 1540 Fractional Non-ablative laser handpiece effectively reduces the appearance in stretch marks following a series of treatment sessions at our cosmetic surgery medical spa. Clinical studies achieved an average improvement of 51% and 75% in the appearance of stretch marks based upon blinded reviews of photographs comparing pre-treatment photographs with results three-months post-treatment. The Cynosure ICOn 1540 fractional handpiece diminishes the appearance of stretch marks because it penetrates into the dermis and directly stimulates the growth of new and evenly distributed collagen while re-modeling dermal scars.
Before the use of the 1540 fractional laser for the treatment of stretch marks, treatment remained a challenge and consisted of topical skin care lotions, Retin-A cream or superficial laser treatments. However, the ICON 1540 non-ablative fractional laser from Cynosure is the first laser with FDA approval for stretch mark reduction.
The 1540 laser treatment for stretch marks can be performed on all skin types and on all stretch marks in all areas. Some darker-skinned patients may experience mild post inflammatory pigmentation (PIH) that can be treated with skin lightening agents. However, no major adverse reactions or side effects were reported in lighter-skinned patients.
Laser stretch mark treatments using the ICON 1540 fractional handpiece can diminish the appearance of stretch marks in a series of sessions with minimal discomfort and no downtime. Realistically, patient's need to realize the process is slow and will need approximately four to eight treatment sessions over three to six months to achieve for maximum desired results.
